Dennis Odoom, a 27-year-old from Johnston, was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison on Tuesday for leading a fraud conspiracy that involved purchasing Land Rovers using stolen personal information. Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom announced the sentencing, which also includes three years of supervised release and a $1,000 fine.

Odoom admitted to recruiting accomplices for the scheme. He provided a fraudulent ID to one co-conspirator and transported them to a dealership in New Hampshire, where they purchased a Land Rover valued at $96,256 with illegally obtained credit. Odoom was expected to pay the accomplice $2,000 for their role in the transaction.

In addition to the New Hampshire purchase, court documents indicate that Odoom and his co-conspirators also used stolen credit information to acquire another Land Rover in Rhode Island, which had a final sales price of $111,183. Odoom pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft on December 12, 2024.

Another co-defendant, 27-year-old Roy Sweets, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in March and is set to be sentenced on June 10. A third co-defendant, 28-year-old Adalberto Mauricio Romero, faces charges for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Restitution related to the fraudulent activities will be determined by the court at a later date, according to Bloom. The case highlights the ongoing issues of identity theft and fraud in the vehicle purchasing industry.
