Ex-Smyrna Detective Sentenced to 10 Years for Child Sexual Abuse
Michael Kealty, a Magnolia resident, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for coercing a minor into sexual activity. The announcement was made by Shannon T. Hanson, Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware, following U.S. District Judge Richard G. Andrews's ruling in the U.S. District Court for Delaware.
Court documents revealed that Kealty manipulated a 16-year-old girl over six months, forcing her to create sexually explicit images and videos. He threatened her with the release of her photos if she did not comply with his requests. Investigators also uncovered his efforts to exploit other underage girls, including a 13-year-old.
Kealty, a former detective with the Smyrna Police Department, faced charges for distributing and possessing child sexual abuse material in October 2023. He later pleaded guilty to an enhanced charge of Coercion/Enticement of a Minor, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years.
Acting U.S. Attorney Hanson condemned Kealty's actions, emphasizing that he betrayed his duty and community by preying on vulnerable children. She commended the FBI for their commitment to bringing child predators to justice, underscoring the importance of holding such individuals accountable.
FBI Special Agent in Charge William J. DelBagno highlighted the severity of Kealty's crimes, citing the breach of trust inherent in his role as a protector of the community. He concluded that Delaware is safer with Kealty incarcerated, preventing any further victimization.
