Blackfoot man charged after allegedly punching a pregnant woman several times in the stomach - East Idaho News

A Blackfoot man, Ruben Hernandez, 34, has been charged in connection with a domestic violence incident involving a pregnant woman, who is reported to be 33 weeks along. The charges include robbery, grand theft, domestic battery with traumatic injury, aggravated battery causing harm to a pregnant female or fetus, and attempted strangulation. If convicted, Hernandez could face up to 51.5 years in prison.
The situation unfolded in Idaho Falls on March 4, with the police dispatched after the woman reported that Hernandez had stolen her vehicle and assaulted her. In her call, she expressed concerns about her health, indicating she believed her water had broken. Despite her injuries, she declined medical assistance initially, leading officers to dispatch an ambulance upon their arrival.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers noted clear signs of physical injury on the woman, including a swollen face and scratch marks on her upper chest. She described how an argument turned violent after she refused Hernandez’s demand to change their route home. This led to physical assaults, including slapping, choking, and repeated punches to her belly.
The altercation escalated as Hernandez attempted to strangle her while issuing threats to her life, resulting in her losing control of her bodily functions. After dragging her out of her vehicle, Hernandez stole her wallet and coat along with the vehicle itself, complicating her chances of seeking help.
Witnesses nearby reported hearing the woman scream during the incident, yet one friend indicated that he did not witness the physical fight. Hernandez is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on April 1, although he maintains his innocence as he faces serious allegations. Everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
