2 suspects in custody after shots fired at police during chase, crash on I-25
DENVER (KDVR) -- Two individuals have been taken into custody following a dramatic police chase that involved shots being fired at officers early Wednesday morning on Interstate 225, culminating in a crash on Interstate 25. The Aurora Police Department reported that the incident began around 1:30 a.m. when they initiated a pursuit of suspects believed to be involved in felony menacing.
The chase commenced when police followed a red vehicle from East Colfax Avenue onto I-225. During this pursuit, a white pickup truck intervened, allegedly attempting to block the officers and throwing items from its bed. Things escalated quickly when occupants of the truck reportedly fired shots at the pursuing police.
Continuing onto Interstate 25 southbound, the police executed a "PIT maneuver," successfully bringing the pickup truck to a stop just before Arapahoe Road. The two occupants of the truck, a man and a woman, suffered injuries in the crash and were transported to a hospital, where they will be placed under police custody following their release. The specifics of their injuries remain unclear at this time.
Importantly, none of the officers involved in the pursuit were injured. As part of the investigation, authorities recovered a firearm at the crash scene but were unable to locate the red car that had fled southbound into Douglas County.
The situation is still under investigation, with police continuing to gather details on the events that unfolded.
