Man blames right foot after rear-ending Bartholomew County deputy

A Bartholomew County Sheriff's deputy was rear-ended at a Columbus intersection on Tuesday by a man who attributed the accident to his right foot. Deputy J.D. Myers was stopped in his patrol vehicle at the intersection of 10th Street and Whitfield Drive when the collision occurred.
The driver responsible for the crash, 69-year-old David Caldwell, claimed that his foot "slipped off the brake." However, while documenting the accident, Deputy Myers noticed Caldwell attempting to discard a baggie containing suspected narcotics under his vehicle.
Upon confrontation, Caldwell denied any knowledge of the baggie. Subsequent testing revealed the presence of fentanyl in the package. Additionally, authorities found Caldwell in possession of a drug pipe and a firearm at the time of the incident.
Caldwell's actions raised concerns not only regarding the accident itself but also the potential drug-related offenses. The sheriff's office took appropriate measures, leading to Caldwell's arrest.
He was booked into the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges, including possession of paraphernalia and possession of narcotics while carrying a firearm.
