South Berwick man charged with murder of girlfriend
A South Berwick man, 43-year-old Jeremiah Godfrey, has been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend, 37-year-old Sherri Sweet. The incident unfolded on Saturday evening when Godfrey called 911 to report a domestic dispute occurring at their residence on Brattle Street.
According to police reports, Godfrey indicated to authorities that he had been arguing with Sweet when a struggle ensued over a firearm. He claimed that during this altercation, Sweet was shot and was unresponsive when help arrived.
Sherri Sweet was subsequently rushed to Portsmouth Regional Hospital but succumbed to her injuries, passing away around 10:15 p.m. on Sunday. The New Hampshire Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that her cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.
Following the investigation, Jeremiah Godfrey was taken into custody and charged with murder on Wednesday.
