Neighbors see difference with Operation Route 66 in International District

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - In week six of Operation Route 66, aimed at revitalizing the Central Avenue corridor, agencies have made over 300 arrests. This initiative is being welcomed by local residents and businesses, particularly PB&J Family Services, a child abuse prevention agency located in Albuquerque's International District.
Stacy Carrasco, site manager at PB&J Services, shared the challenges the organization previously faced, including vandalism and discarded waste near their playground area. This created a hostile environment for both children and staff, as they often found themselves cleaning up after incidents involving theft and other disturbances.
Recent weeks have shown tangible improvements in the area. Carrasco noted a decrease in nighttime activities captured by security cameras and fewer instances of unhoused individuals occupying their parking lot, which she attributes to the sustained efforts of local law enforcement.
Operation Route 66 has resulted in more than 300 arrests, with about 200 individuals having outstanding warrants for various offenses, including drug possession and violent crimes. This crackdown has contributed to an overall feeling of safety and stability in the neighborhood.
Carrasco expresses optimism about the ongoing changes, believing they can lead to a more secure environment for the families and children they serve. Her commitment to restoring beauty to the neighborhood reflects the hopes of many who wish to see a revitalized and safe community.
