Emily Pike, a 14-year-old who went missing from a Mesa group home two months ago, was tragically found deceased off the U.S. 60 northeast of Globe, Arizona. In response to this devastating incident, ABC15 returned to the San Carlos Apache tribal land to speak with the tribal council and members of Pike's family. Tribal Chairman Terry Rambler expressed the emotional toll the case has taken on the community, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability concerning group homes.

In light of Pike's death, the San Carlos Apache Tribal Council has initiated a resolution urging Arizona lawmakers to implement stricter regulations on group homes, like the one from which Pike ran away. They have also called on the Arizona Attorney General’s Office to investigate the home’s licensing and operational standards. Chairman Rambler emphasized the importance of examining safety guidelines to ensure that children's welfare is a priority in these facilities.

Currently, there is only one group home on San Carlos Apache Tribal land, which can accommodate a limited number of children. The tribal council is considering expanding this home and potentially investing in additional facilities off reservation land. They acknowledge the need for adequate funding and resources to achieve these goals, aiming to keep more children close to their community.

To better understand their internal processes, the tribal council plans to commission an independent study to assess how children are placed in the system and the outcomes they experience. This review will look for areas needing improvement to enhance the safety and wellbeing of children within their care.

While the investigation into Pike's death remains ongoing, the Gila County Sheriff's Office has reported that no suspects have been identified yet. Chairman Rambler mentioned that the tribe is offering a $75,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. A memorial wake for Pike is set to begin this Friday, with services planned for Saturday at San Carlos High School. The Pike family has requested support from the community for flowers through a local shop, Anna's Petals.
