A former physical education teacher at Greenfield Central Junior High School, Joshua J. MacIntyre, 41, has been charged with public intoxication following an incident on February 25. MacIntyre's unusual behavior prompted administrators to ask him to leave school, leading to an internal investigation that ultimately resulted in his dismissal on March 10. He was initially placed on paid leave before being fired after the school board meeting.

The formal charge against MacIntyre, classified as a Class B misdemeanor, was filed in Hancock County Superior Court 2 on March 18. He subsequently surrendered in court on March 24, where a not guilty plea was entered, and he posted a $400 cash bond for release from Hancock County Jail. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for May 8, with a bench trial set for June 19.

Witnesses reported that MacIntyre appeared disheveled and was behaving erratically when approached by a school resource officer. His breath indicated alcohol consumption, and he demonstrated a lack of balance while trying to access his vehicle. Additionally, the officer noted MacIntyre's aggressive demeanor, during which he blamed the officer for the situation and used derogatory language.

During the officer's investigation, two red bottle caps resembling those of Fireball Whiskey were found protruding from MacIntyre's pockets, and an empty bottle of the same alcohol was later discovered. MacIntyre has a concerning history as well, with a recent background check revealing multiple driving while intoxicated charges from March 2024 in Madison County.

Following the incident, law enforcement evaluated MacIntyre's wellbeing and determined he was unfit to supervise students. Despite their efforts, he declined to participate in a chemical screening and refused assistance for transportation home. Consequently, he was monitored as he left the school premises, leading to the current legal proceedings.
