South Berwick man charged with murder of girlfriend

A South Berwick man, 43-year-old Jeremiah Godfrey, has been arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend, 37-year-old Sherri Sweet. The incident unfolded on Saturday night when Godfrey called 911 to report a domestic dispute at their home on Brattle Street around 8:44 p.m. During the call, he claimed there was a struggle over a gun that resulted in Sweet being shot.
Emergency responders transported Sweet to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead around 10:15 p.m. on Sunday. The New Hampshire Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that she died from a gunshot wound to the head. Following the investigation, Godfrey was arrested on Wednesday and charged with murder. He is currently being held at York County Jail.
The shocking news of this incident has left the South Berwick community in disbelief. Local residents expressed their surprise, reflecting on the town's reputation as a safe and welcoming place. One resident, David Yarian, emphasized, "I think it's a great town. It's safe, great people, I would recommend it to anybody. It's a great place to live."
As the investigation continues, community members are grappling with the impact of such violence in their neighborhood. The event serves as a stark reminder of the potential for domestic disputes to escalate tragically.
Godfrey’s arrest marks a significant development in the case, and authorities are expected to provide further updates as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
