Oklahoma lawmakers propose naming highway for Veronica Butler, Jillian Kelley

Oklahoma lawmakers have proposed a bill to honor Veronica Butler and Jillian Kelley, two Kansas women tragically killed last spring in Texas County, Oklahoma. The legislation includes plans to designate approximately two dozen highway sections after notable state figures, with Butler and Kelley being commemorated on a stretch of State Highway 95 that runs two miles north from Four Corners.

Both Butler and Kelley were residents of Hugoton and were reported missing prior to their discovery on April 14, 2024. The unfortunate situation stemmed from a custody dispute involving Butler and the family of Wrangler Rickman, her children's father. Kelley was serving as the court-appointed supervisor during an arranged visit for Butler to pick up her children on March 30.

The investigation into the women's deaths named several suspects, including Tiffany Adams, Paul Grice, Tad Cullum, and Cole Twombly along with Cora Twombly. While Grice and Cora Twombly have pleaded guilty to charges, the other suspects continue to face serious allegations, including murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit murder.

The proposed bill seeks not only to memorialize the victims but also to raise awareness about the serious issues surrounding domestic violence and custody disputes. By naming the highway section after Butler and Kelley, lawmakers aim to honor their memory and ensure that their story contributes to discussions about safety and justice.
