GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV) - Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch addressed vital issues facing the state during her visit to the Gulf Coast Business Council Luncheon on Thursday morning. Key topics included immigration, child protection, and the recently passed Walker Montgomery Act, named after a Starkville teen who tragically took his life due to sextortion.

Fitch highlighted the ongoing efforts of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force, which she leads in partnership with over 80 law enforcement agencies across Mississippi. The task force is dedicated to combating child exploitation, having received over 6,300 tips last year regarding such incidents. Fitch emphasized the urgency of safeguarding children from predators, stating, "Every picture, every video is a child," and reiterated the commitment to protecting vulnerable youth.

Another critical issue discussed was the alarming rise of human trafficking in conjunction with the fentanyl crisis. Fitch noted that both issues are often interconnected, as drug-related crimes frequently accompany trafficking operations. She encouraged the public to report any suspected trafficking victims, emphasizing the potential to save lives. In recent years, the state has successfully rescued over 330 victims, including 25 minors.

Beyond child safety and trafficking, the luncheon also addressed educational initiatives, including legislation aimed at banning cell phones from classrooms and introducing financial literacy programs for students.
