An East Chicago man, Freddie Burley Jr., has been charged with multiple drug offenses after an investigation revealed his alleged involvement in cocaine and marijuana distribution near an elementary school. The 42-year-old faces seven counts in total, including three enhanced charges due to the proximity of his alleged drug activities to George Washington Elementary and the School City of East Chicago Administration Building.

The investigation included three undercover drug purchases conducted between March 7 and March 18, which led detectives to secure a search warrant for Burley's apartment on March 25. During the execution of the warrant, officers reportedly found 16.5 grams of cocaine, 9.3 grams of marijuana, and various other items, including a handgun and over $1,000 in cash, suggesting that Burley was engaged in selling drugs.

Detectives connected the purchases made outside Burley’s apartment building, located directly across from the school properties, to evidence that indicated an intention to distribute the drugs. Additionally, the presence of multiple cell phones, a digital scale with drug residue, and individual drug packaging pointed to organized illicit activity.

Burley was at home when police conducted the search and was subsequently taken into custody. He now sits in the Lake County Jail with an $85,000 bond, awaiting his next court appearance set for April 4.

This case underscores ongoing concerns regarding drug-related activity in proximity to schools and youth, as authorities continue to monitor and act against such offenses.
