Maui doctor tried to use syringes on his wife while assaulting her on hiking trail, police say

A Maui doctor, Gerhardt Konig, has been charged with attempted murder after an alleged violent attack on his wife while they were hiking on Pali Puka Trail in Honolulu. Court documents reveal that the incident occurred when Konig, seeking to take a selfie, pushed his wife off the trail and assaulted her with a rock, striking her approximately ten times. He has been held on a bail of $5 million and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing next week.
According to police reports, the trouble began when Konig asked his wife to take a selfie while standing near the edge of a cliff. Feeling uncomfortable, she declined and attempted to walk back, which led to Konig yelling at her. When she refused to return, he reportedly pushed her into bushes, resulting in a struggle. She escaped but was then assaulted by Konig, who grabbed a rock and hit her head while also viciously pulling her hair.
During the attack, the wife witnessed Konig trying to use two syringes against her, but she managed to wrestle them away from him. Injured, she crawled over to two hikers who heard her cries for help and called 911. The woman sustained severe injuries, including multiple lacerations to her face and head, and was transported to a hospital where she was reported to be in serious but stable condition.
Following the assault, Konig fled the scene, prompting a lengthy search that resulted in the closure of a nearby state park. He was ultimately apprehended that same evening after a brief chase on foot.
Konig, who serves as an anesthesiologist at Maui Health, has been suspended pending the investigation into the incident. While he was previously listed as a provider by Maui Health, he has since been removed from their directory. Kaiser Permanente, under which Konig is contracted, confirmed that they have suspended his credentials and ability to treat patients during the ongoing investigation.
