A Maui doctor, Gerhardt Konig, has been accused of assaulting his wife while they were hiking on the Pali Puka Trail in Honolulu. According to court documents released Thursday, the incident escalated after Konig attempted to take a selfie with her at the edge of a cliff. When his wife expressed discomfort and began to walk back, he reportedly yelled at her before pushing her into nearby bushes, leading to a physical struggle.

During the altercation, Konig allegedly struck his wife on the head multiple times with a rock while also pulling her hair and slamming her face into the ground. Despite her injuries, she managed to escape and seek help from two hikers who heard her cries. The hikers subsequently called 911, leading to her hospitalization with serious injuries.

In a more shocking detail, the police report indicated that Konig attempted to use two syringes on his wife during the incident, though she was able to prevent him from doing so. She sustained significant lacerations to her face and head and was treated in a hospital where her condition was stabilized.

Following the attack, Konig fled the scene, prompting a lengthy police search that resulted in his arrest that same evening after a brief chase. His bail has been set at $5 million, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for the next week.

In response to the incident, Maui Health, where Konig works as an anesthesiologist, confirmed he has been suspended pending an investigation. Though he is not an employee of Kaiser Permanente, which partners with Maui Health, both organizations have taken steps to suspend his medical credentials amid the ongoing investigation.
