A Maui doctor, Gerhardt Konig, has been arrested following a violent incident involving his wife on a hiking trail in Honolulu. According to police documents, Konig attempted to take a selfie with her on the Pali Puka Trail, but when she expressed discomfort and began to walk away, he pushed her into bushes, where they struggled. During the altercation, he allegedly struck her on the head with a rock multiple times.

Konig's wife managed to escape and call for help, and witnesses heard her cries and contacted authorities. After sustaining serious injuries, including large lacerations to her face and head, she was taken to a hospital where she is reported to be in serious but stable condition. During the confrontation, she reportedly saw Konig attempt to use two syringes on her, but she was able to wrest them away from him.

Following the attack, Konig fled the scene, prompting a lengthy search that included the closure of a state park. Police located and arrested him later that evening after a brief foot chase. His bail has been set at $5 million, and a preliminary hearing for the attempted murder charge is scheduled for next week.

Konig is employed as an anesthesiologist at Maui Health, which operates healthcare facilities in Maui County. The health organization stated that he has been suspended pending the ongoing investigation into the incident. Despite being listed as a provider in the past, his name has since been removed from the online directory.

Kaiser Permanente, which contracts with Maui Health for medical services, clarified that Konig is not a direct employee. They have suspended his medical credentials and privileges as part of their investigation into the alleged assault.
