Maui doctor tried to use syringes on his wife while assaulting her...
HONOLULU (AP) - A Maui physician, Gerhardt Konig, faces serious charges after an alleged assault on his wife during a hike on the Pali Puka Trail in Honolulu. Court documents reveal that the incident began when Konig requested a selfie with her at a precarious spot near the trail's edge. When she expressed discomfort and attempted to walk away, he pushed her into some bushes.
According to the police declaration, a struggle ensued, and Konig violently struck his wife on the head approximately ten times with a rock while also grabbing her hair and forcing her face into the ground. The victim managed to escape and called out for help, drawing the attention of two nearby hikers who subsequently contacted emergency services.
In a disturbing turn, the wife reported that Konig tried to use two syringes on her, but she successfully wrested them away from him. She was hospitalized with significant lacerations to her face and head and remains in serious but stable condition. Following the assault, Konig fled the scene, sparking a significant police search that ended with his arrest later that evening after a brief chase.
Konig has been charged with attempted murder, and his bail has been set at $5 million. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for next week. His attorney did not respond to requests for comment as of the latest reports.
Konig, employed as an anesthesiologist at Maui Health, has been suspended pending an investigation. While his past affiliation with Kaiser Permanente was noted, the organization stated he is not a direct employee and has likewise suspended his credentials during the ongoing inquiry.
