Maui doctor tried to use syringes on his wife while assaulting her on hiking trail, police say

A Maui doctor, Gerhardt Konig, faces attempted murder charges after allegedly assaulting his wife during a hike on the Pali Puka Trail in Honolulu. According to court documents, Konig pushed her off the trail and struck her head with a rock approximately ten times. His bail has been set at $5 million, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for next week.
The incident occurred when Konig asked his wife to take a selfie with him near the edge of the trail. When she expressed discomfort and started to walk away, he became aggressive, pushing her into bushes. Following a struggle, Konig reportedly struck her multiple times while holding her hair and forcefully smashing her face into the ground. The victim eventually crawled to two passing hikers, who called for help.
Witness accounts reveal that Konig attempted to use two syringes on his wife but she managed to wrest them away from him. She suffered significant injuries, including large lacerations to her face and head, and was transported to a hospital in serious but stable condition.
After fleeing the scene, Konig was arrested later that evening following a brief foot chase. His employment has come under scrutiny; he is an anesthesiologist with Maui Health, which has suspended him pending an investigation. Although he is contracted through an independent entity associated with Kaiser Permanente, his credentials have also been suspended.
The situation has prompted widespread concern over the nature of the assault, and details from the court documents highlight the seriousness of the accusations against Konig. He is currently awaiting trial and has yet to make public comments regarding the allegations.
