LEWISTON (WGME) -- Following a public records request, Maine State Police have released hundreds of images related to the tragic mass shooting in Lewiston in 2023, which resulted in 18 fatalities and left 13 others injured.

These released photos include aerial views of the crime scenes and details from the shooter's abandoned vehicle located at a Lisbon boat launch. Furthermore, there are images of the high-powered weapons and ammunition discovered inside the car.

A total of 800 images were made available, representing only a small portion of over 15,000 photographs taken by police during the investigation.

The agency provided a statement explaining their decision to withhold thousands of other images. They emphasized the importance of protecting the privacy of survivors and the families of victims, stating that they do not wish to release graphic photos related to the tragedy.

Additionally, police expressed concerns about revealing investigative techniques and security measures through the release of certain images.
