Relatives recount 'toxic' relationship before Waterloo woman's death

Rebecca Taylor's family has shared insights into her tumultuous relationship with her boyfriend, Lamarcus Lemario Martez Williams, who is currently facing charges of second-degree murder in her death. Taylor's sister, Monique Todd, described the relationship as "toxic" and characterized Williams as overly possessive. Prosecutors allege that during a physical altercation on November 30, 2022, Williams struck Taylor's head and possibly choked her, leading to her sudden cardiac arrest.
The couple had been together for about two years, during which tensions reportedly escalated. Latosha Todd, another sister, recounted instances of prior arguments, revealing that Williams made aggression-laden threats, saying he would kill Taylor. These allegations paint a grim picture of a relationship marred by violence.
In April 2022, Taylor's son, Alwan Jones, witnessed a physical assault where Williams had her neck in his grasp, with Taylor pleading for him to stop. The police intervened during that incident, which resulted in Williams pleading guilty to domestic assault, acknowledging he had threatened Taylor with a knife.
The tragic events leading to Taylor's death unfolded when she called 911, reporting threats from Williams with a knife. After the call abruptly ended, police arrived to find Williams barricaded in the house. Upon entering, they discovered Taylor unconscious, with signs of trauma that included bruises and internal bleeding.
As the trial continues, the evidence presented highlights the severity of the abuse Taylor endured, raising questions about the systemic failures in addressing domestic violence. The case underscores the need for greater awareness and intervention in such dangerous relationships.
