LEWISTON (WGME) -- Maine State Police have made public hundreds of photos taken during the investigation of the 2023 Lewiston mass shooting, a tragic event that resulted in 18 fatalities and 13 injuries. The released images come in response to a public records request and capture various aspects of the aftermath.

Among the 800 released photos are aerial views of the crime scenes, as well as images showcasing details of the shooter's vehicle, which was discovered abandoned at a Lisbon boat launch. Additionally, investigators documented the high-powered firearms and ammunition found within the car.

Despite this release, Maine State Police indicate that these images represent only a small portion of the over 15,000 photographs taken throughout the investigation. The agency is tightly controlling the dissemination of further images for specific reasons.

In a statement, they emphasized the importance of privacy for survivors, the families of victims, and those present during the photography, stating they are "entitled to maintain their privacy without releasing gruesome photographs of this tragedy."

Moreover, the agency aims to protect law enforcement's investigative techniques and security protocols by withholding additional photos that might compromise ongoing procedures or safety plans.
