Maine State Police have made public hundreds of photos taken during the investigation of the tragic mass shooting in Lewiston in 2023, which resulted in 18 fatalities and 13 injuries. This release follows a public records request for documentation related to the incident.

The released collection includes aerial images of the crime scenes, as well as detailed photos of the shooter's car, which was found abandoned at a Lisbon boat launch. Among the images are also photographs of the high-powered weapons and ammunition recovered from the vehicle.

A total of 800 images were made public, representing just a small portion of the over 15,000 photographs that investigators captured during their comprehensive inquiry into the shooting.

The Maine State Police have explained their decision to withhold many of these photographs, emphasizing the need to protect the privacy of survivors, families of victims, and others present at the scenes. They expressed a commitment to avoiding the release of graphic imagery that could further distress those affected by the tragedy.

Additionally, authorities are cautious about disclosing images that may reveal law enforcement's investigative methods and security plans, prioritizing confidentiality and respect for those involved.
