Maine State Police release hundreds of photos from Lewiston mass shooting investigation

Maine State Police have made public hundreds of images taken during the investigation of the Lewiston mass shooting in 2023, which resulted in 18 fatalities and 13 injuries. The release, prompted by a public records request, offers a glimpse into the tragedy's aftermath.
Among the 800 photographs released are aerial views of the crime scenes and detailed shots of the shooter's abandoned vehicle discovered at a Lisbon boat launch. The images also include the high-powered firearms and ammunition found within the car, providing insight into the resources used in the attack.
Despite the substantial volume of images made available, this collection represents only a small portion of the over 15,000 photographs captured by authorities throughout their investigation.
Officials released a statement explaining the decision to withhold the majority of images. They emphasized the importance of privacy for survivors, families affected by the tragedy, and other witnesses who were present during the events captured in the photographs.
The police agency indicated that they aim to avoid releasing graphic images that could further distress the victims' families and those involved, as well as to protect sensitive law enforcement techniques and security plans from public disclosure.
