Maine State Police release hundreds of photos from Lewiston mass shooting investigation

LEWISTON (WGME) -- Maine State Police have made public hundreds of images captured during the investigation of the 2023 Lewiston mass shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 18 individuals and injuries to 13 others. These images, released following a public records request, include aerial views of the crime scenes and details of the shooter's abandoned vehicle found at a Lisbon boat launch.
Among the released photos are images of high-powered firearms and ammunition discovered inside the shooter's car. A total of 800 images have been made available, representing only a small portion of the over 15,000 photographs taken by state police during their investigation.
Accompanying the release, the agency provided a statement explaining their decision to withhold many additional images. They emphasized the importance of privacy for survivors, victims’ families, and witnesses, stating that releasing graphic images would not be appropriate.
Furthermore, the police expressed concerns regarding the potential disclosure of sensitive investigative techniques and security plans that could be evident in the withheld photographs. The agency seeks to balance transparency with the need to protect the privacy and dignity of those affected by the tragedy.
