Maine State Police release hundreds of photos from Lewiston mass shooting investigation

LEWISTON (WGME) -- In the wake of the devastating 2023 mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine State Police have made available hundreds of photographs taken during their investigation. This tragic incident resulted in the deaths of 18 individuals and left 13 others injured.
The released images came as a result of a public records request and include aerial views of the crime scenes, as well as detailed photos of the shooter's car, which was discovered abandoned at a Lisbon boat launch. Additionally, the collection features images of high-powered weapons and ammunition recovered from the vehicle.
On Thursday, police shared 800 photos, which represent only a small portion of the over 15,000 images captured during the course of the investigation. The selective release underscores the sensitivity surrounding the aftermath of the shooting.
Authorities explained their rationale for withholding thousands of photos in a statement, emphasizing the importance of privacy for survivors, families of the victims, and others present during the investigation. They expressed a commitment to avoiding the release of graphic images that could further traumatize those affected.
Moreover, the police indicated that they aim to protect their investigative methods and security measures by not disclosing certain photographs, reinforcing their focus on both public interest and the dignity of those involved in the tragedy.
