Maine State Police release hundreds of photos from Lewiston mass shooting investigation

LEWISTON (WGME) -- Maine State Police have shared hundreds of images taken during the investigation of the devastating mass shooting in Lewiston that occurred in 2023, resulting in 18 fatalities and 13 injuries. The release was prompted by a public records request.
Among the 800 images made public are aerial views of the crime scenes and detailed pictures of the shooter's abandoned vehicle, which was located at a Lisbon boat launch. Additionally, the photos display high-powered firearms and ammunition discovered inside the car.
While the police agency released these images, they noted that this collection is merely a small portion of the more than 15,000 photographs taken during the investigation.
In their statement, the agency explained their decision to withhold thousands of other photographs. They emphasized the importance of preserving the privacy of survivors and the families of victims, stating that releasing graphic images would be inappropriate.
Moreover, the police mentioned a concern about revealing investigative techniques and security protocols through the public release of certain photographs.
