Rowan County teacher accused of having sex with 15-year-old in classroom

MOUNT ULLA, N.C. (WBTV) - A Rowan County teacher and soccer coach, Cristyan Alfonso Cabrera, has been terminated following accusations of engaging in sexual activities with a 15-year-old student. The 25-year-old was arrested on March 27 after school officials reported concerns about an "inappropriate relationship" between Cabrera and the student.
According to the Rowan County Sheriff's Office, the alleged incidents took place in an empty classroom and included various sexual acts from January 9 to March 19. Cabrera, who taught world history at West Rowan High School, is no longer employed by the district, although officials have not clarified whether he resigned or was dismissed.
The district expressed their distress over the situation, emphasizing their commitment to cooperating with local law enforcement throughout the investigation. They acknowledged the impact this news may have on students and families and stated that counseling would be made available to those affected.
Cabrera, who was also the men's varsity soccer coach, had recently been recognized as the South Piedmont Conference Coach of the Year during his inaugural season. A social media post from November 2023 highlighted his achievements in coaching, underscoring the shock surrounding his current legal troubles.
Upon his arrest, Cabrera was charged with multiple offenses, including statutory rape and a sex act with a student. He was denied bond shortly after his arrest and remained in Rowan County jail as of Friday morning, with a court appearance scheduled for the same day.
