'He is trying to kill me,' woman said during doctor husband's attack on Hawaii hiking trail

HONOLULU -- A doctor in Hawaii has been charged with second-degree attempted murder after allegedly attacking his wife on a hiking trail. According to court documents, Gerhardt Konig reportedly struck his wife, Arielle, on the head with a rock numerous times and attempted to inject her with syringes before a bystander intervened. The incident took place on the Pali Puka Trail in Honolulu.
Arielle Konig recounted that while hiking with her husband, he wanted her to take a selfie near a cliff edge. Feeling uncomfortable, she declined and began to walk away, prompting him to yell and subsequently push her into the bushes. He then allegedly assaulted her, hitting her head with a rock around ten times and forcing her face into the ground.
In a disturbing escalation, Arielle reported that Gerhardt took out two syringes from his bag and attempted to use them on her. Thankfully, she managed to wrest the syringes away from him. A witness, Amanda, who heard Arielle's desperate cries for help, rushed to the scene and saw the assault in progress, prompting her to call for help.
Upon police arrival, Arielle identified her attacker as her husband, expressing that he was trying to kill her. She sustained significant injuries to her face and head and was taken to the hospital, where she was reported to be in serious but stable condition.
Gerhardt Konig, 46, has a background in medical services, previously working as an anesthesiologist and professor in Pittsburgh before moving to Maui. Following his arrest, he made a court appearance but has yet to enter a plea, with his preliminary hearing set for March 31. His ex-wife and her husband expressed shock and sadness over the incident, extending their support to Arielle.
