LEAVENWORTH COUNTY, Kan. — Police continue to investigate the tragic death of a 3-year-old boy, known as EJ, who was found unresponsive at a Leavenworth apartment complex early Wednesday morning. Officers responded to a 911 call just before 4:30 a.m. and, upon arrival at the Woodland Village Apartment Complex, discovered that EJ had already died. While there were no visible signs of trauma, law enforcement indicated that the cause of death was "not readily apparent" and an autopsy has been ordered.

Family members remember EJ as a vibrant and loving child with a passion for Spider-Man, biking, and Nerf gun battles. His uncle, Charles Rogers, described him as "very special" with a deep affection for family, friends, and the great outdoors. Loved ones gathered on Thursday to honor his memory, decorating balloons, writing heartwarming messages on windows, and sharing fond stories about the beloved boy.

According to his stepfather, EJ had spent the night at a neighbor's home when he passed away. The family speculates that he may have woken up during the night, found access to a substance, and ingested it. Despite the stepfather's attempts to perform CPR, he was unfortunately unable to revive the boy.

Rogers expressed the profound impact EJ had on his life, highlighting the lessons of love and presence the young boy taught him. "He was one of the funniest kids," Rogers said, reminiscing about EJ's infectious smile and humble spirit. The family and community continue to grieve the loss, celebrating the joy EJ brought into their lives.

As the investigation into the circumstances surrounding EJ's death unfolds, the family holds onto cherished memories, ensuring that the legacy of this vibrant child will never be forgotten.
