Former fire department captain headed to prison for child porn

A former fire captain from the Holland area, Todd Achterhof, has been sentenced to over six years in prison for possession of child pornography. The sentencing took place on March 28 in Ottawa County Circuit Court, where Achterhof, 49, faced serious charges that included aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material and using a computer to commit a crime.
Achterhof, who served as a captain at the Graafschap Fire Department since 1997 until May 2024, had a notable background that included working as a dispatcher for Hope College campus safety. His actions have drawn significant attention, with a substantial number of supporters present in the courtroom during his sentencing.
The case against Achterhof escalated after an FBI investigation led to a search warrant executed at his residence in Holland in May 2024. Evidence revealed that between May 2023 and April 2024, he had engaged in online activities on a forum linked to child pornography, including interactions with an undercover investigator where discussions of sexually assaulting a child occurred.
During the sentencing, Ottawa County Circuit Judge Karen Miedema highlighted the severity of the evidence presented, which included disturbing photos and videos depicting children, including infants, being sexually abused. Miedema emphasized the heinous nature of the material Achterhof possessed.
In a moment of reflection, Achterhof addressed the court, acknowledging the profound harm he had caused to his family, employment, and community. He expressed awareness of his addiction and indicated that he is taking steps to address it. His sentence ranges from six years and seven months to a maximum of ten years in prison.
