CASE: Monessen man sentenced to serve up to 4 years for stabbing

Greensburg, PA – Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole W. Ziccarelli announced the sentencing of Robert Varner, a 62-year-old man from Monessen, who was found guilty of stabbing another man in 2023. Common Pleas Judge Christopher Feliciani sentenced Varner to serve two to four years in prison, followed by five years of probation.
In October 2024, Varner pleaded guilty to charges including aggravated assault, possession of an instrument of a crime, and recklessly endangering another person. The incident occurred during a verbal altercation with the victim, during which the victim reportedly pushed and punched Varner. In retaliation, Varner returned with a knife and stabbed the victim five times.
Both men were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the stabbing, which heightened the situation. The victim sustained serious injuries and was subsequently airlifted to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, where he managed to survive the attack.
District Attorney Ziccarelli expressed her gratitude to Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Echard for her efforts in prosecuting the case. The outcome reflects the ongoing commitment to addressing violent crime and ensuring justice in Westmoreland County.
This sentencing serves as a reminder of the severe consequences resulting from acts of violence and the importance of law enforcement and prosecution in upholding public safety.
