New Jersey school custodian gets jail term for contaminating food with bodily fluids, cleaner

BRIDGETON, N.J. -- Giovanni Impellizzeri, a former school custodian, has been sentenced to eight years in state prison for disturbing acts involving food contamination at the Upper Deerfield Township School District. The 27-year-old from Vineland admitted to compromising food intended for children and staff by introducing bodily fluids and cleaning products, as well as engaging in inappropriate behavior with cooking utensils.
Before his sentencing, Impellizzeri expressed remorse for his actions, stating that he had no justification for his behavior. His disturbing actions came to light in 2023 when authorities reviewed videos he recorded, which depicted him contaminating the food and utensils. These videos were subsequently shared online, leading to an investigation.
Health officials reported that while Impellizzeri's actions were egregious, the bodily fluids involved were unlikely to threaten health, with no illnesses directly tied to the incidents having been reported. This revelation somewhat mitigated concerns, though the situation remained alarming.
Impellizzeri faced multiple charges, having pleaded guilty to an official misconduct charge and an unrelated count for possessing child sexual abuse material. The latter charge was uncovered during the investigation into his food contamination activities, reflecting a troubling pattern of behavior.
The case highlights serious issues related to safety in school environments, prompting discussions about hiring practices and oversight for custodial positions tasked with the well-being of students and staff.
