American Legion Post 26 Uncovers $20,000 Fund Misuse; SLED Ongoing Investigation
AIKEN, SC - An investigation is currently underway at American Legion Post 26 after the organization discovered a significant misappropriation of funds totaling over $20,000. This alarming revelation has led to the removal of the post's financial officer, David Savage, who is now under investigation for embezzlement by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.
An internal review of financial records conducted between last November and this February revealed unauthorized cash withdrawals exceeding $17,000. Post Commander Frank Carson expressed his distress over the situation, stating that the dishonesty puts various community programs at risk. "I'm angry because now we're not going to be able to do those things," he remarked, emphasizing the impact on the organization's charitable efforts.
Savage, who had served as Post Treasurer since 2023 and was well-regarded for his contributions to youth programs, is now at the center of this investigation. Carson noted that Savage had been a respected member of the post and even received the title of Legionnaire of the year for his contributions. Attempts to reach Savage resulted in him acknowledging his role in the matter.
The organization has filed a report with law enforcement, bringing uncertainty to their ability to fund key initiatives such as baseball programs and Boy's State. Carson expressed the urgency of fundraising efforts to ensure these vital programs continue: "We're going to have to dig deep, get out in the community and do that fundraising," he stated. The organization now faces the challenge of rallying community support amidst these troubling circumstances.
As the investigation continues, the Sheriff's Office has forwarded the case to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, and no arrests have yet been made. Although Savage remains a post member, he is no longer in the role of financial officer, leaving the American Legion Post 26 to navigate this difficult situation while seeking answers and support from their community.
