PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) announced the arrest of 49-year-old Paul Clay Jr., a suspect in multiple sexual assault cases that span nearly two years. Authorities believe he could be linked to additional assaults beyond those currently identified.

Clay faces serious charges, including five counts of rape, first-degree sodomy, strangulation, coercion, as well as various weapons and drug offenses. These charges were brought forth following a grand jury indictment last week.

The investigation began with an incident reported on June 26, 2023, when a homeless woman stated that Clay had persuaded her to visit his apartment. Once there, he threatened her into sexual activity and continued to assault her physically and sexually over several days until she was able to escape.

Another victim reported being assaulted by Clay after accepting his offer for temporary shelter in his apartment. This woman became a victim of violence after her family reported her missing and was ultimately able to call for help after escaping.

Detectives from PPB's Special Victims Unit have spoken with several witnesses who recounted interactions with women leaving Clay's apartment in distress. Authorities are urging anyone who may have been assaulted by Clay or has relevant information to contact detectives. Clay is currently held at the Multnomah County Detention Center.
