AURORA, Colo. -- A mother has received a summons following an incident at Arrowhead Elementary School where a child was found with a loaded gun on Friday morning. The Aurora Police Department responded around 8:30 a.m. after reports of a student displaying a firearm. Law enforcement quickly secured the backpack containing the weapon, initiating a lockdown protocol at the school, which was lifted shortly after, allowing classes to continue as normal.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the firearm was loaded but contained no live round in the chamber, and there were no signs of intent to harm anyone. Local parents expressed their concerns following the incident. Gina Cacciatore, a concerned mother, emphasized the need for increased security measures, suggesting that all schools should implement metal detectors to enhance safety.

Several parents arrived at the school to check on their children, with some opting to take them home early due to the situation. Michelle Henderson, a grandparent, shared her relief after being able to ensure her grandchildren’s safety, noting that while such incidents are surprising, society is becoming desensitized to them.

The 39-year-old mother has been summoned for child abuse and failing to safely secure a firearm, as Colorado law mandates that firearms must be responsibly stored to prevent unauthorized access by minors. The law classifies the unlawful storage of a firearm as a class 2 misdemeanor. Aurora police confirmed that the student will not face any charges in this case.
