'Learn how to be a man': Young man in sexual relationship with teen sentenced to probation - East Idaho News

Kooper James Anderson, a man from Idaho Falls, has been sentenced to eight years of probation after pleading guilty to felony injury of a child, originally charged with raping a 16-year-old. The sentencing took place before Senior District Judge Jon Shindurling, where the implications of Anderson’s actions were discussed in court.
During the hearing, both the teenage victim and a relative provided statements that highlighted Anderson's manipulation and deception concerning his relationship with the victim. The relative mentioned that the family had discovered Anderson hiding in the victim's closet, leading to the police investigation. The victim's account described how Anderson took advantage of her youth and inexperience.
Investigators uncovered messages between Anderson and the victim, indicating they were in a relationship, with Anderson advising her to use a different name to protect himself. When questioned by law enforcement, Anderson admitted to the sexual relationship, which further solidified the case against him.
Anderson's defense argued that the case’s nuances, such as age differences, complicated the perception of victimization, suggesting that if he were slightly younger, the situation might not have been viewed as a crime. However, the prosecution maintained that the nature of Anderson's actions warranted serious consequences, ultimately requesting a substantial sentence despite the plea agreement.
The judge ultimately ruled for probation rather than prison time, imposing conditions including community service, full-time employment, and mandatory sex offender treatment. Shindurling expressed hope that Anderson would learn from this experience, aiming to prevent future offenses while noting that he would face penalties should he fail to comply with the terms of his probation. Due to the details of the charge, Anderson will not be required to register as a sex offender.
