An anesthesiologist, Gerhardt Konig, was indicted on attempted murder charges after allegedly attacking his wife during a hike on a precarious trail in Hawaii. The couple, visiting Oahu from their home on Maui, was hiking when the incident occurred. The wife filed a petition for a temporary restraining order, detailing her husband's violent behavior, where he reportedly pushed her toward the edge of a cliff and attempted to inject her with a syringe.

The situation escalated on what was meant to be a birthday celebration for the wife. Following her discomfort with the narrow, steep trail, she expressed her reluctance to continue hiking. Konig, however, suggested taking a photo at the cliff's edge. As the tension mounted, he reportedly grabbed her arms and pushed her toward the precipice, ultimately leading to a struggle between the couple.

During the physical altercation, Konig allegedly took out a syringe and attempted to inject her, raising severe concerns given his profession as an anesthesiologist, which gives him access to dangerous medications. In a desperate move to escape, she bit his arm, but the situation worsened as he began hitting her on the head with a rock. Two women on the trail witnessed the assault and intervened, calling 911.

After the attack, Konig's wife was taken to the hospital, while he was arrested by the authorities later that evening. In her petition for a restraining order, she mentioned a history of jealousy and accusations of infidelity from Konig, which may have contributed to the incident. A judge has since signed an order that prohibits him from approaching her or their children.

Konig's employer, Maui Health, has suspended him pending an investigation. Although he is not directly employed by Kaiser Permanente, his credentials with them have also been suspended. The case highlights serious issues of domestic violence, and individuals facing such situations are encouraged to seek help through resources like the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
