An anesthesiologist, Gerhardt Konig, has been indicted on attempted murder charges after a troubling incident on a hiking trail in Hawaii, where he allegedly tried to push his wife off a cliff and attempted to inject her with a syringe. The couple had traveled from their home in Maui to Oahu to celebrate his wife's birthday, leaving their two young sons with a nanny. According to her petition for a temporary restraining order, the wife expressed discomfort with the hike, especially on the narrow ridge sections of the trail.

The situation escalated as Konig, who had previously accused his wife of infidelity, allegedly grabbed her and pushed her toward the cliff's edge while shouting in anger. Initially believing he was joking, she quickly realized his intentions were serious. In a struggle for her life, she screamed for him to stop and even bit his arm in her defense. The ordeal escalated further when Konig attempted to inject her with an unidentified substance from a syringe.

Witnesses on the trail intervened, calling 911 and assisting the woman down the trail while Konig fled in another direction. She was subsequently taken to a hospital, and authorities arrested him that evening. The court has mandated that he must stay away from his wife and children following the issuance of a restraining order.

During interactions following the incident, Konig allegedly contacted his son, admitting to his intentions to kill his wife and expressing suicidal thoughts. Konig is currently employed as an anesthesiologist at Maui Health and has been suspended from his position pending an investigation.

Kaiser Permanente, which works in affiliation with Maui Health, clarified that Konig is not their direct employee but works for an independent entity under contract. His medical credentials have also been suspended as the investigation unfolds.
