HONOLULU (AP) – An anesthesiologist hiking with his wife on a dangerous trail in Hawaii has been indicted on attempted murder charges after allegedly attempting to push her off a cliff and inject her with a syringe. The incident occurred while Gerhardt Konig and his wife were celebrating her birthday in Oahu, away from their home on Maui. A judge has since issued a temporary restraining order requiring him to stay away from his wife and their children.

According to the petition for a restraining order, the couple had previously sought therapy after Konig accused his wife of infidelity, which fueled his jealousy. On the hiking trip, she expressed discomfort with the narrow trail that featured steep drop-offs, but he insisted they continue. At one point during the hike, Konig suggested they take a photo near the cliff's edge, prompting her request for him to move away as she began to feel dizzy.

The situation escalated when Konig grabbed her and began pushing her toward the cliff, yelling that he was "sick of her." She initially thought he was joking, but quickly understood the seriousness of the threat as they struggled. In a desperate attempt to protect herself, she bit him, but he then went for his bag, retrieving a syringe and trying to inject her with an unknown substance.

The altercation drew the attention of two women on the trail, who called for emergency help. They assisted the victim in getting away while Konig fled in another direction. After the incident, she was taken to a hospital, and the police arrested Konig that evening. It was later revealed that he had contacted his adult son, admitting to his violent intentions and indicating thoughts of harming himself.

Konig, who works at Maui Health, has been suspended pending an investigation. While Maui Health confirmed his suspension, Kaiser Permanente clarified that he is not a direct employee but part of a contracted entity, and his medical credentials have also been suspended during this inquiry.
