An anesthesiologist, Gerhardt Konig, faces attempted murder charges after a disturbing incident during a hike in Oahu with his wife. According to a petition for a temporary restraining order filed by his wife, Konig allegedly assaulted her on a dangerous hiking trail, pushing her toward the edge of a cliff and attempting to inject her with a syringe. The couple had traveled from Maui to Oahu to celebrate his wife's birthday, leaving their two young sons with a nanny.

The petition reveals a history of jealousy stemming from accusations of infidelity made by Konig in December. Despite undergoing therapy together, the situation escalated dramatically on their hike. After expressing discomfort about continuing on the narrow trail, Konig held her phone and hiking bag while she climbed a tree for a photo. He later insisted on taking a picture near the cliff edge, despite her discomfort.

During the hike, Konig allegedly grabbed his wife by the arms and pushed her toward the cliff while yelling at her. She initially thought he was joking, but quickly realized his intentions were serious as they struggled. He attempted to inject her with an unknown substance from a syringe, which raised alarm given his medical background as an anesthesiologist with access to potent medications.

The situation intensified as he reportedly grabbed a rock and struck her repeatedly on the head. Fortunately, two women nearby intervened and helped her escape the trail while calling 911. Konig was arrested later that evening, and the couple’s domestic violence ordeal has drawn attention.

Maui Health, the hospital system where Konig works, suspended him pending an investigation. Kaiser Permanente, which partners with Maui Health, clarified that he is not directly employed by them but is contracted to provide medical services, and has also suspended his medical credentials during this investigation.
