Indicted Hawaii doctor's wife details alleged hiking trail attack in restraining order petition

An anesthesiologist named Gerhardt Konig has been indicted on attempted murder charges after an alarming incident during a hike with his wife in Hawaii. According to a petition for a temporary restraining order, Konig allegedly grabbed his wife by the arms and pushed her toward the edge of a cliff while attempting to inject her with a syringe. The couple was visiting Oahu from Maui to celebrate her birthday when the events unfolded on a hiking trail described as dangerous.

The couple's troubling history reportedly includes accusations of infidelity, which fueled Konig's extreme jealousy and escalating behavior towards his wife, as detailed in the petition. Despite undergoing therapy and counseling, the relationship deteriorated dramatically during the hike. When his wife expressed discomfort about continuing the trail, Konig's behavior took a menacing turn after they stopped to take photos.

As she climbed a tree for a photo, Konig proposed they take another near the cliff's edge. When she asked him to step back due to feeling dizzy, he complied momentarily but later seized her arms, attempting to push her off the cliff while vocalizing his anger. Believing he was joking at first, she quickly realized he was serious, prompting a struggle wherein she screamed for him to stop.

In a desperate attempt to defend herself, she bit his arm as he reached for a syringe filled with an unknown substance. During the chaos, he also grabbed a rock and assaulted her, but the intervention of two bystanders who called 911 led to her escape. Following the incident, she was taken to the hospital, while Konig was arrested later that evening.

Konig is currently suspended from his position as an anesthesiologist with Maui Health, which is affiliated with Kaiser Permanente. The health organizations have stated his credentials have been suspended pending investigation. Authorities and counseling resources are available for victims of domestic violence, underscoring the seriousness of such incidents.
