OPELIKA, Ala. (WTVM) - The family of Ivy Baker expressed relief and joy after a guilty verdict was reached in the murder trial of Jamario Mitchell, who was found responsible for the tragic death of the two-year-old in November 2021. As the verdict was announced, tears of joy filled the eyes of family members, marking the end of a heavy emotional trial.

Senior trial attorney Madison Grantham emphasized the strength of the evidence presented, stating it proved Mitchell's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The 32-year-old defendant remained motionless as Judge Christopher Hughes conveyed the jury's decision, confirming Mitchell's conviction for felony murder.

The investigation began on November 11, 2021, after Ivy was discovered dead in her bed, a sippy cup by her side and a blanket draped over her. Detective Elijah Hugh noted that there were early suspicions regarding Mitchell and Ivy's mother, Chasity Baker, remarking that indicators often suggest complicity from those close to the victim.

In the courtroom, the family's grief was palpable, with Laderrian Prince, Ivy's heartbroken father, expressing their long-held hope for justice. He fondly recalled his daughter as a loving child and shared that although the verdict brought relief, it could never replace the loss of Ivy.

District Attorney Jessica Ventiere praised the conviction as a tribute to the collective efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors dedicated to advocating for victims. Mitchell is scheduled for sentencing in late April, while Chasity Baker is set to face trial at a later date.
