Indicted Hawaii doctor's wife details alleged hiking trail attack...
An anesthesiologist from Maui, Gerhardt Konig, was indicted on attempted murder charges after allegedly attempting to harm his wife during a hike on Oahu. The incident unfolded while the couple was celebrating her birthday, as they hiked a treacherous trail with steep cliffs on both sides. The wife detailed in a petition for a temporary restraining order how Konig grabbed her and pushed her toward the cliff's edge before trying to inject her with a syringe.
The couple had been experiencing relationship difficulties, which included accusations of infidelity from Konig that led to intense jealousy. Despite undergoing therapy and counseling, the situation escalated during their hike. As she expressed discomfort and attempted to distance herself from the cliff, Konig reportedly became aggressive, leading to physical struggles where she feared for her life.
During the altercation, he allegedly pulled out a syringe, which raised concerns due to his role as an anesthesiologist, giving him access to potentially dangerous drugs. In a desperate attempt to fend off his attack, she bit his arm. After a violent episode that included Konig striking her with a rock, two bystanders intervened, calling 911 and assisting her in escaping.
Following the incident, Konig was arrested after his wife was taken to the hospital for treatment. Disturbingly, he later contacted his adult son, admitting to the attack and expressing suicidal thoughts. In response to the allegations, Maui Health, where Konig is employed, has suspended him pending further investigation.
Kaiser Permanente, which oversees the healthcare operations on Maui, clarified that Konig is not a direct employee but is affiliated with an independent entity providing medical services. His credentials and ability to see patients have been suspended as authorities continue to investigate the serious charges against him.
