HONOLULU (AP) — Gerhardt Konig, an anesthesiologist, faces attempted murder charges after allegedly trying to kill his wife during a hike in Hawaii. The couple, visiting Oahu from Maui, were celebrating her birthday when the incident occurred on Monday. According to a petition for a temporary restraining order filed by his wife, Konig grabbed her arms and pushed her toward a cliff's edge before attempting to inject her with a syringe.

The couple's marital troubles surfaced in December when Konig accused his wife of infidelity, leading to significant jealousy on his part. They had been in therapy since then. Following the incident, a judge ordered Konig to stay away from his wife and their children. The Associated Press is withholding her name to protect her identity as a domestic violence victim.

On the day of the alleged attack, the wife expressed discomfort with the hiking trail, which had steep drop-offs. Konig initially hiked ahead before returning to her. After briefly climbing a tree for a photo, he suggested taking another picture near the cliff's edge. When she requested to move away due to dizziness, Konig reportedly reacted violently, pushing her toward the cliff and yelling that he was "sick" of her.

As they struggled, Konig allegedly removed a syringe from his bag and attempted to inject her. In a bid to defend herself, she bit him, after which he reportedly calmed down but then attacked her with a rock. Two other hikers witnessed the chaos and called 911, assisting her in escaping the situation while Konig fled in another direction. She was later hospitalized, and he was arrested that evening.

Following the incident, Konig made alarming statements to his adult son about trying to kill his wife and his own suicidal intentions. Konig works for Maui Health, which operates hospitals in the area, and the organization has suspended him pending an investigation. Although he is technically employed by an independent entity, Kaiser Permanente, which oversees medical services, has also suspended his credentials during this inquiry.
