CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Shana Cloud, the wife of a missing former Green Beret, was arrested on Friday and charged with first-degree murder and concealment of death in connection with her husband's case. Investigators announced that DNA collected from human remains found in a pond in February was identified as belonging to 50-year-old Clinton Bonnell.

Bonnell, a student at Methodist University, was last seen on January 27, reportedly at the Fit4Life gym and later at the university. Concerns about his well-being led his family to report him missing when he failed to attend class the following day. His sister, Stefanie Firkins, described him as a diligent and committed individual who would not vanish without reason.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office conducted a search in February at Butler Nursery Road and Gainey Road, as part of the investigation into Bonnell's disappearance. Cadaver dogs were also utilized in the search, although the specifics of their findings remain unclear. Authorities expressed that it may take days to properly identify the remains and highlighted the importance of confirming the identity before releasing further details.

Firkins stated that her brother had been making plans for his future, and his sudden disappearance was both concerning and perplexing. She noted that Bonnell texted a friend indicating he was heading home after being on campus, but he has not been heard from since.

As the investigation continues, Cloud is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond, and her first court appearance is scheduled for March 31, 2025. Meanwhile, Methodist University has expressed sympathy for Bonnell's family and is cooperating with local law enforcement during this difficult time.
