Indicted Hawaii doctor's wife details alleged hiking trail attack in restraining order petition

An anesthesiologist, Gerhardt Konig, faces attempted murder charges after allegedly attacking his wife during a hike in Hawaii. The incident occurred on a dangerous trail in Oahu, where Konig reportedly pushed his wife toward a cliff while trying to inject her with a syringe, according to a petition she filed for a temporary restraining order. A judge has since mandated that Konig stay away from both his wife and their children.
The couple had traveled to Oahu to celebrate the wife's birthday, leaving their two young sons in the care of a nanny on Maui. During the hike, the wife expressed discomfort and reluctance to continue, leading to a troubling turn of events. While taking photos, Konig suggested they pose near a cliff, but when she asked for space due to feeling dizzy, he aggressively pushed her toward the edge, resulting in a struggle for her safety.
During the altercation, Konig allegedly attempted to use a syringe to inject her with an unknown substance. His medical background as an anesthesiologist raised concerns about the potential lethality of any medication he might have had. Despite her desperate pleas and a physical struggle, he then escalated the violence by hitting her with a rock. Fortunately, two nearby hikers intervened and called 911.
The victim managed to escape with the assistance of the bystanders while Konig fled in another direction. She was taken to a hospital, and Konig was arrested later that evening. He reportedly contacted his adult son afterward, revealing his intent to kill her and expressing suicidal thoughts about jumping off a cliff.
Maui Health, Konig’s employer, has suspended him pending an investigation, clarifying that he works for an independent entity affiliated with Kaiser Permanente, which has also suspended his medical credentials during this inquiry. The case highlights the severe issue of domestic violence, prompting renewed calls for support and awareness.
