RIVERDALE, Utah (KUTV) -- Neighbors are relieved that the man accused of killing his girlfriend and setting their home on fire earlier this week is now in custody. Ricardo Trujillo Rojel, 29, appeared in court for the first time on Friday, facing serious charges including aggravated murder, aggravated arson, and obstruction of justice.

The incident occurred when Trujillo Rojel allegedly stabbed his girlfriend in the neck, ignited their home, and fled the scene with their two young children. Isabel Hernandez, a nearby resident, expressed her shock at the events, stating that the area is usually peaceful and calm. "What happened to them is just really sad... it could happen to anybody," she remarked, emphasizing her hope for a safer community.

Defense attorney Skye Lazaro provided insight into the gravity of the charges, indicating the potential for severe penalties, including life imprisonment or even the death penalty for aggravated murder. Lazaro cautioned that the legal proceedings may take time, as a preliminary hearing—a probable cause hearing—is generally set for later in such serious cases.

As the neighborhood comes to terms with the tragedy, many residents are left feeling emotional. Hernandez echoed the sentiments of her neighbors, expressing concern for the children now without their mother and hoping for a resolution that fosters safety in their community.

Currently, the two children involved in this case have been placed in the custody of family members, while Trujillo Rojel is due back in court next week. Neighbors continue to process the shock of the event and advocate for a return to tranquility in their lives.
