Troopers: Waverly man arrested for attempted arson of occupied trailer

BARTON, N.Y. (WENY) -- New York State Police arrested 50-year-old Jeremy W. Searles from Waverly, NY, on March 25, 2025. He faces serious charges of Attempted Arson in the second degree, a class C felony, along with Criminal Mischief in the fourth degree, a misdemeanor. These arrests stemmed from a disturbing incident that took place the day before in the Town of Barton.
On March 24, troopers responded to a call from the Tioga County 911 Center regarding a disturbance and a brush fire at a residence on Ellis Creek Road. When they arrived, officers found areas of burnt brush on the property, indicating that a fire had recently been set.
The investigation revealed that Searles had been in a dispute with three other individuals and deliberately ignited the brush in an attempt to set fire to an occupied trailer. Fortunately, the individuals involved in the conflict managed to extinguish the flames before they could cause significant damage.
Authorities consider attempted arson a serious offense, reflecting the dangers and potential harm associated with such actions. Searles’ charges highlight the legal ramifications of endangering lives and property through reckless behavior.
