Lumberton, New Jersey Mayor Gina LaPlaca is facing serious charges, including driving under the influence (DUI) and child endangerment, following a St. Patrick's Day incident. She was arrested on March 17 after concerns were raised about her erratic driving. Reports indicate she had picked up her 2-year-old son from daycare while allegedly intoxicated.

Body camera footage from responding officers captured the moments when they arrived at LaPlaca's home around 5:40 p.m., where they removed the child from the car seat amid concerns for his safety. During the encounter, LaPlaca struggled to maintain her balance, raising further suspicion among the officers present.

Officers noted damage to her vehicle and indicated they received multiple complaints about her driving, which included running a red light and changing lanes erratically. LaPlaca's apologies during the exchange did little to alleviate the situation.

A field sobriety test led to her arrest for DUI, with police finding an open container of alcohol in her 2019 BMW—a water bottle containing alcohol and a small liquor bottle. At the station, it was reported that her blood alcohol levels were high enough to necessitate a hospital visit.

LaPlaca is scheduled to appear in court on April 15 to face the charges. The situation raises significant concerns about her conduct as a public official and the welfare of her child.
