'Good hit': Video shows Mich. sergeant run to highway, use spike strip to stop wrong-way driver

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. -- A Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office sergeant showcased remarkable bravery in a recent incident involving a wrong-way driver on U.S. 131. The dramatic confrontation occurred at 1:01 a.m. on March 26, when the sergeant identified a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lanes near West D Avenue.
In an effort to avert a potential catastrophe, the sergeant maneuvered ahead of the rogue driver and activated his emergency lights. When this didn't compel the driver to stop, the sergeant swiftly retrieved spike strips from his trunk, positioning himself on the roadway to deploy them in front of the speeding vehicle.
Body camera footage captured the moment the car encountered the spike strips, resulting in flattened tires. "Good hit, good hit," the sergeant can be heard stating as the device effectively disabled the vehicle around the two-minute mark in the video, preventing any collisions and ensuring public safety.
The driver, upon realizing the damage to his vehicle, admitted, "I got a flat," while remaining inside the now immobile car. Authorities arrested him on charges of suspected drunk driving and drug possession. Fortunately, the only casualties from the encounter were the suspect's tires.
The sheriff's office praised the sergeant's quick thinking and decisive actions, which contributed to a safe resolution of the situation without injuries. The suspect is currently awaiting arraignment at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
